Eugene Serebryany

Co-President

Eugene is a senior in Pierson College, majoring in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. He grew up in Moscow, but went to high school in Newton, MA. Like most of his MATHCOUNTS students, he finds that math is hard. His mission, however, is to demonstrate that it is also fascinating. He wants MATHCOUNTS to be the Montmartre of math education, where all of our wonderful coaches, teachers, and students come together to share their crazy, creative, and cool new ways to teach and learn math. In his free time, he likes playing any game that involves a ball and a racket and spending long hours in lab studying the molecular workings of those nerve cell receptors that help our brains remember exciting new things.

Chenyu Lin

Co-President

Chenyu Lin is a junior in Pierson College, double majoring in Economics and Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry. He was formerly a member of the Fairview Middle School MATHCOUNTS team (2002-2004) and the Florida MATHCOUNTS Team (2004). As a budding, green middle-schooler, Chen first became involved with math competitions because he liked the shiny trophies (in his past life, he was a magpie). He has since realized that winning is not all there is to math competitions, and would like to teach his students that the satisfaction earned from learning and loving mathematics is almost as potent as the satisfaction gained from kicking everyone’s butts. In his free time, Chen may be found playing tennis, oil painting, or staying up late with his friends wondering why Emma Watson went to Brown.

Takuya Sawaoka

Coaching Coordinator

Takuya is a junior in Morse, majoring in Psychology. He participated in math competitions during high school, loves psychology research (morality especially), drawing (portraits especially), and gawking at adorable animals (puppies especially).

Mack Su

Curriculum Coordinator

Mack is a sophomore in Berkeley College. He hails from the mean streets of (suburban) St. Louis, MO, where MathCounts unfortunately wasn’t nearly as big as it is in New Haven. He absolutely loves working with kids – they’re just so carefree and energetic! Having spent most of his childhood in cities and suburbs, he really enjoys being outdoors. Mack is also a fan of biking, playing tennis, geocaching, and listening to country music. He dreams of driving a big green tractor (of the John Deere variety) someday. And his favorite movie is Titanic.

Liangsha Xu

Co-Competition Coordinator

Liangsha is a rising junior in Trumbull and majoring in Economics and International Studies, hoping to one day get paid to travel the world. As a proud alum of DC Mathcounts Nationals 04, she now bribes middle school children with candy to love the world of numbers and shapes as much as she does. She is spending fall semester studying in Paris, but eagerly awaits the day when she comes back to help hundreds of enthusiastic kids infiltrate Yale for a day of nerdy fun.

Aneesh Raghunandan

Co-Competition Coordinator

Aneesh is a senior in Trumbull College double majoring in Applied Mathematics (with concentration in Statistics) and Economics.  He first heard about Mathcounts in 9th grade, when it was unfortunately too late to compete; as such, he had to settle for constantly losing to Chenyu's and Liangsha's schools in high-school math competitions.  Nevertheless, he enjoys coaching with MATHCOUNTS Outreach as well as writing competition questions (ask Chenyu for a firsthand account).  His other pursuits include running around like a chicken with its head cut off on the intramural fields, cooking food generally deemed too spicy for normal "human" consumption, road running, and constantly inventing and innovating ways to further deprive himself of sleep.  He hopes to one day have a full-time job as a nerd.

Courtney Kaplan

Recruitment Coordinator

Courtney is a sophomore in Pierson College. She hasn't declared a major yet, but is a MAJOR Mathcounts enthusiast (clearly, she enjoys horrifically bad jokes as well.) She enjoys running around New Haven, while reliving her glory days as a high school athlete, and praying that her questionable sense of direction doesn't fail her. Some of Courtney's other favorite activities are eating, sleeping, and educating New Haven students about various health topics as a community health educator. Courtney loves teaching and working with kids, and hopes to save the world one day.

Ian Hoffman

Secretary & Dwight Hall Liaison

Ian is a sophomore in Berkeley College.  Although he hasn’t firmly decided on a major yet, he is most likely going to major in either mathematics, economics, or some combination thereof.  Ian’s middle school didn’t have a MATHCOUNTS program, however, Ian always participated in his school’s interscholastic mathematics team throughout middle school and high school.  Ian enjoys making up math problems for himself (and others) to solve and truly loves spreading his passion for math to others.  He feels that mathematics is often undervalued in school curricula across the country and hopes people see the beauty of mathematics.

Tong Zhan

Treasurer

Zach Weil

Special Events Coordinator

Michael Weiner

President Emeritus

Michael Weiner is a senior physics major in Silliman College from Atlanta, Georgia. He enjoyed participating in his high school math team, which won the state championship in its class his junior and senior years. Unfortunately, his middle school did not have MATHCOUNTS, but he is glad to bring it to New Haven public schools. Michael is thrilled to be returning to MATHCOUNTS Outreach for his fourth year of coaching, after serving as co-president during the 2009-2010 year.

Zoe Liberman

President Emerita

Zoe is a senior in Berkeley College majoring in Psychology. Although her middle school did not have a MATHCOUNTS program, Zoe always participated in math and science competitions. She loves to answer any and all questions about MATHCOUNTS and spends about 24/7 on e-mail, so never hesitate to ask her something. While not working with MATHCOUNTS, Zoe works at the Infant Cognition Center and the Social Cognitive Development Lab.

Brian Edwards

Founder

Brian graduated from Yale in 2008 and is currently working at the MATHCOUNTS national office in Alexandria, Virginia. He is a MATHCOUNTS alum (New York, 1999; Nationals, 2000) and still enjoys solving MATHCOUNTS problems. At Yale, Brian majored in cognitive science and studied causal reasoning in humans and monkeys. He started MATHCOUNTS Outreach in 2006 to address the shortage of MATHCOUNTS programs in the New Haven community and provide math-enrichment opportunities for New Haven students. Brian was also a proud “Hounie,” a member of Calhoun College, and an active participant on its intramural teams, including baseball, bowling, softball, and hockey. The highlight of his intramural career was scoring two goals against Jonathan Edwards College in hockey and getting to keep the pucks.

Caroline Drucker

Former Secretary & Dwight Hall Liaison

Caroline Drucker is a senior in Ezra Stiles College from Fair Lawn, New Jersey. She enjoys working with capuchin monkeys in Yale's comparative cognition laboratory, and she is also a fan of musical theater. Caroline had a lot of fun competing with her middle school's and high school's math teams. She is excited to be on the MathCounts Outreach board and help provide the same positive experience for New Haven students that she had with extracurricular math.

Mark Wilson

Former Co-Competition Coordinator

Mark is a supa-senior in Jonathan Edwards College majoring in computer science and Chinese. He competed in state and national math competitions throughout high school and greatly enjoys igniting young students' enthusiasm for mathematics through MATHCOUNTS Outreach. His current aspirations include learning to play the complete Titanic piano theme and beating Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Ari Berlin

Former Co-President

Ari Berlin is a senior in Calhoun College. He's a MATHCOUNTS Alum from the Arroyo Seco Junior High MATHCOUNTS team. He majors in 1) African Studies, 2) International Studies and 3) Awesomeness.  He wants to teach at some point in his life, possibly in southern Africa for a time. Maybe in NYC as well. Who knows. He looks forward to coaching a New Haven Public School MATHCOUNTS team. He hopes the Yale MATHCOUNTS Outreach program will expand to other cities, countries and planets. Possibly Mars.

Eli Luberoff

Webmaster Emeritus

Eli was a Physics Major in Calhoun College. He was a part-time music enthusiast, singing with and accompanying the Yale Glee Club and playing piano whenever he finds one, whatever the hour. He tutored University and Elementary school students. At one point in his life, Eli was athletic, and he still attempts various sports from time to time. Eli believes that his MATHCOUNTS experience was instrumental in his acclimation to the real world, which has by now hopefully happened. He still has difficulty sorting his whites from his colors when doing laundry.
